The Transformation of Dance

The internet is, by definition, a collectively transformative ,paradigmn shifting, curve jumping medium. (Credits to Guy.K)

For most of us, we know that the internet behemoth will eventually transform  existance as we know it. Certain industries like the music or publishing have been the first casualties and many more will follow.

However, on the flip side of that coin, There have also been incredible advances made in some circles. We are only now beginning to feel the initial tremors of what will become an avalanche of  ‘NEW’.

One of those fields that are being transformed  is that of  ‘Dance’.

I am a great fan of Talent shows. Part of it is that they could well be the last of what is ‘real’ on TV. I have watched most of “SYTYCD” (So you think you can dance) as well as seen Diversity win Britain’s got talent.

As I follow the development of Dance, I believe we are on the cusp of a dance renaissance. One that will be incredible to watch.

The main driving force behind this renaissance is,

The theory is that dance is a medium communicated visually.

The Language of dance is universal, and seeks to communicate the human experience.

This experience is translated through a visual medium.

Dancers then learn visually by watching, interpreting and practising.

Youtube allows them to watch, and test and try and watch again ad infinitum till they get it.

Once they ‘get’ it, they get to add their take and post a video of their own…

the process carries on.

The power of the internet allows this exchange to develop and grow until eventually,  dance becomes a truely universal language.

I had initially thought of this as a single long post but  as I process this topic, I think we shall leave an open category and fill it up as we go along.

This should be interesting.
