Everything I needed to know about marketing, I learned from a storyteller.

I have very vivid memories of this program about storyteller. He had a distinct voice and I remember watching the program as a child and singing along.

Just yesterday I decided to go search for the song and found it on youtube (Of Course). I’d like to share it  here.

The lyrics go:

I’m a storyteller, and my stories must be told
I have many stories, tales for both the young and old.?
I have many voices to describe many places
Many names have I, and many faces
In Russia I am Ivan, in England I am John.
In Germany I’m Johan, In Sweden I am Jan.
From my many travels I have gathered these tales,
To teach you good sense, when all else fails
sometimes there are tears, sometimes there is laughter,
But always, a Happily ever after.

It was a bit of a revelation to me.  This is what marketing is about!

I mentioned in a previous post about marketing as story telling.

Lets break this song down:

I’m a storyteller, and my stories must be told

I am a story teller. What I bring to market has a story that you will be interested in and I seek to share this story with you.

I have many stories, tales for both the young and old?

What I have to bring may not resonate with everybody but I seek to bring the right message to the right audience to whom it will resonate with.

I have many voices to describe many places

My message is tailored to match the feel of the product  or goods that I seek to bring.

Many names have I, and many faces
In Russia I am Ivan, in England I am John.
In Germany I’m Johan, In Sweden I am Jan.

I contextualize the message so that my target audience can understand what I am conveying as well as how it is relevant to them.

From my many travels I have gathered these tales,

I bring something different to the mix, a different perspective, a different approach, something sets me apart from the crowd, that makes me extraordinary.

To teach you good sense, when all else fails

I understand the needs of the market, sometimes better than the individuals themselves because of the broad perspective I take. I bring a relevant, involved and applicable solution to a felt need that exactly fits what the market needs, wants and desires.

sometimes there are tears, sometimes there is laughter,

Engagement is sought not only on a transactional hardware level , but on heartware as well. Much like Kevin Roberts Lovemarks,  engagement done right has to transcend  headware and connect on a deeper level which says “We are one, I understand your needs, I want to meet your needs, our goals align and I promise to keep meeting those needs.”

But always, a Happily ever after.

Happily ever after. Continually engaged, permission to dialogue, permission to  keep meeting meeds and getting feedback to keep the cycle going.

Much like the hokey pokey, This is what it is all about.
